Nearly Half Of Americans Believe Government Poses Immediate Threat To Liberties, Rights
In the latest Gallup Poll which asked people if they felt the government was a threat to their individual liberties, nearly half of the respondents said that the government WAS, in fact, a threat to their individual liberties. This is the highest it has ever been since the poll started being taken by Gallup back in 2003. Although only 28% of Democrats say that the government is a threat to their liberties, 61% of all Republicans and 57% of all Independents agree that the government is a threat. We can see the divide between party lines and those who are sticking with President Obama through thick and thin. As Gallup states, the numbers during the Bush Administration were also high, but not nearly as high as this and the number of Democrats were much higher than Republicans at that time, with Independents believing that no matter who is in office they are a threat to the freedom of the American people.
With these numbers getting higher and higher by the year, does the government have to start taking notice of what the American people feel or will they put it aside and not pay any attention to it? Pelosi, during the debate on Health Care Reform, responded very sarcastically to someone who asked her it was against the Constitution to pass such legislation. This is one of the reasons, I believe, that the numbers are much higher than they have ever been. The people see that the government is a threat to individual liberties if they do not understand where their power ends and the people’s power begins. The people in power are no different than any other people in history who wanted even more power once they tasted a little, and if we go down the road of those other civilizations we will end up in the trash heap of history along with them.
One has to ask themselves how much of a threat the government is to their individual liberties, and if they believe the government is going to or already has taken away their liberties in some way, what they will do about it. We have the Tea Party out in force being called racists and Nazi’s because of their stance on government spending and some of the laws that are passed through our Congress. Are these Tea Party members actually Nazi’s because they believe in something many in government probably do not? Are they racists because a couple Hollywood celebrities say so? This is one of the reasons why many people today feel their government is out to get them, because many who have positions in government open their mouth and say things that could be and are taken as a threat to that liberty. If we the people will not stand up to that fight against those who want to take our liberties and flush them down the toilet then we will not survive much longer as such an open society.
We do not have to look that far to see the kind of government interference that the people are worried about. Recently, the EPA has said that those people who use over-the-counter inhalers will have to switch to a different kind because of climate worries. No one in their right mind believes me using my over-the-counter inhaler will be a threat to the environment, but the EPA sure does and those who use them will not have to get a prescription and pay even more for their medications. During a time when people have less and less money to spend, this seems like one of those regulations that the EPA should step back from. In fact, it is one they have been waiting on for a good long time. We have allowed government agencies and their heads, who are NOT elected by the people, to make regulations that, in fact, should not be coming through departments but through the Congress itself. If the people saw their Congress passing legislation that said they could not use their inhalers anymore, then they would be up in arms. Those who have no idea what the EPA is will be waiting until they hear this on the evening news or from their doctor. Is that not one of the reasons why the people in this nation fear for their liberties?
There are many ways we can combat this tyranny that we see, and contrary to some people’s opinions we do not have to be violent while doing so. I know there are many groups out there that would see a violent revolution as a good thing for America, but we all know that would be the worst thing this country has even seen. We need a non-violent revolution where we go to Washington, state our demands, and not leave until something is done for the people. Talk of the government becoming too powerful used to be left to a small group of people who otherwise were outcasts in every other circle, but today it is much more widespread and the people are starting to wonder how far down the whole this country will fall and how many rights that we perceive as our own and God given will be restricted in some way. Now, do not get me wrong, there are times when certain people must be treated differently for one reason or another. If you knew that your neighbor was plotting an attack on America, would you not want the Feds to come to their home and make sure they told everything they knew about the attack, or would you want them taken to the local jail and processed while the attack occurs? In that case, many of those responding, I believe, would answer differently. There is a fine line between security and liberty, however, and crossing that line is something our government is good at. We have all seen the photos from the airports where small children and the elderly have been subjected to searches they never should be, but even with 49% of Americans saying that they believe the government is a threat the people are fairly silent on the matter. Is this because they agree with the practices or because they feel it is best for the country as a whole? I am not so sure.
It is time for a revolution in this nation. The people need to stand up and demand that their government not limit their God-given rights any longer to the benefit of someone else. We are at a tipping point where the smallest regulation or the smallest piece of legislation could set the people off, but those in Washington have to understand that the people only want to live free. While we are still a very free people considering all the other nations of the world, we are not as free as we should be or once were. The government has decided to take it upon themselves to determine what is best for you, your family, and your well-being no matter if you agree with it or not. Of course, when this happens, people will feel that their rights are being violated and will be afraid that the government will try more in the future. This is not to get anyone out there afraid but to show them that we still do have a voice, we just need the numbers to get that voice loud enough so those in Washington and around the world hear us. We see the riots in other nations these days, and while there are many back stories to those riots, one of the common themes is that the people in these nations want something more than what they have. We are the same, yet we are more inclined to say nothing and be silent while others around the world will protest and voice their opinions. Things will never change until we fill the streets with like minded people telling the government to back down. Things will never change without the right leadership and the direction to move closer toward a real Republic and not something that has been transformed over the past century, and even longer in some aspects.
There will be some who do not agree with this assessment because they believe the government should be there to help everyone and control how we live. That is not the way it should be or even used to be, and getting back to the day where people actually felt free is what these 49% are looking for. The only problem is only a small percentage are vocal, which makes it hard for this government to understand that we the people are serious about our liberties and our freedoms.
