Michael Bloomberg wants Americans to give up their Guns
Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York City called on police officers across the country to go on strike until stricter gun control regulations are signed into law.
Bloomberg, an independent, appeared on CNN’s Piers Morgan Tonight Monday in the wake of the shooting in Aurora, CO and said the following in response to a question from Morgan
"I would take it one step further. I don't understand why police officers across this country don't stand up, collectively, and say, 'We're going to go on strike. We're not going to protect you unless you, the public, through your legislature, do what's required to keep us safe."
Bloomberg went on to say that he doesn’t understand the need for civilians to purchase armor-piercing bullets. The shooter in Colorado did not use armor-piercing bullets nor were any police officers injured.
In fact, only law-enforcement officers can purchase armor-piercing bullets, so that’s already a law.
It is also against the law for police officers in New York City to go on strike; a fact Mayor Bloomberg acknowledged Tuesday when he attempted to retract his statement.
The fact is more gun control won’t prevent violence.
If we unarmed every law-abiding citizen then how would we protect ourselves when the police aren’t around? What will save an elderly couple from being robbed if they have no gun to scare off the intruder?
Criminals obviously have no regard for the law or they wouldn’t be criminals. The only effect a complete gun ban will have is more innocent people being killed.
Consider this, Colorado bans concealed carry permit holders from carrying their weapons in movie theaters. How many lives would have been saved if just one person in the theater in Aurora had a gun on them?
Police officers cannot be everywhere. Therefore, we each have an individual responsibility to protect ourselves and our families. I’m not advocating vigilante justice; rather I’m advocating that people take responsibility for their own safety.
If someone breaks into your home, you can either run and hide and call the police and hope they get there before the robber escapes or you can scare the ‘you-know-what’ out of them by showing them your firepower.
The right to bear arms must be treated the same as every other civil right. If we ignore the Second Amendment, then all of the other amendments can be just as easily forgotten.
You wouldn’t want your freedom of speech or right to due process taken away. The same goes for the right to bear arms.
Whether someone chooses to purchase a gun is a personal choice, but the right is there for everyone to benefit from.
