From 'round the sphere...
Some European countries at the upcoming G-20 (what happened to G-7?) summit are rejecting US calls for more deficit spending [2] to stimulate the world economy.
Brazilian President Luiz Lula da Silva blames "blue-eyed white" folks for the economic mess [3]. Says he doesn't know "a single black banker" in the top ten biggest economies. Aside from the fact that maybe he doesn't get out much and many people in other first world economies, I wonder if he sees any blame to go 'round for second and third world countries that were all too happy to take the revenue that came their way when massive debt financed corporate expansion in their countries. Doubtful.
In case you weren't sure, it seems it's OK for liberal Democrats make big bucks working for big finance companies [4] that go under and take billions in taxpayer bailouts. How do we know? Because White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel made over $300,000 in 14 months as a member of the Board of Directors for Freddie Mac in 2000-2001. Even better, he didn't have to serve on any working committees...just attend 6 meetings a year. And this was back in the days when the practices that put them in their present condidtion were getting underway.
The New Hampshire House of Reps just barely passed a bill to bring gay marriage to that state [5]...now it goes to the Senate. The Governor hasn't said if he'll veto. This is the same week where the same thing is happening in Vermont...but that Governor has indicated he will veto. Meanwhile, US Senator Chuck Schumer has said he favors repealing the 1996 federal Defense of Marriage Act. Click here and let your members of Congress know how you feel [6].
The people that brought you the Kyoto Protocol (which the US did NOT agree to) are back with a new plan [7]...bigger and more expensive. And with You-Know-Who in the White House, well, you get the idea. Get ready to pay more...
Question: if we no longer have a War on Terror, but now "overseas contingency operations", do we start calling "terrorist attacks" "contingencies"?? Just curious.
