The polls, they are a'changin'. Slowly but surely, Romney's moving up in the national polls. He's been far out front of the rest of the pack in Iowa and New Hampshire for some time, and now the latest national polls have hime either tied for second [8], or holding second all by himself [9].
From the Quinnipiac [9] poll:
Total Men Women
Brownback 1 2 -
Gingrich 7 10 4
Giuliani 28 31 24
Huckabee 2 2 1
Hunter 1 2 1
McCain 11 11 11
Paul 2 2 2
Romney 15 13 16
Tancredo 1 1 -
Thompson, F. 12 14 9
Thompson, T. 1 1 1
SMONE ELSE(VOL) 3 3 2
WLDN'T VOTE(VOL) 2 1 3
DK/NA 16 8 24
The even better news is that these polls weren't conducted entrely in the aftermath of his win in the Iowa straw poll this weekend...which has given him a lot of positive publicity.
Also, we've finally got some new polling [10] info for the Palmetto state, and things are looking much better for Romney. The horse-race numbers are as follows: Thompson - 22%, Giuliani - 18%, Romney - 17%, McCain - 11%, Huckabee - 7%.
As I've said for quite a while, once the campaign started to make a serious advertising investment down this way, raising his name ID (seeing that he's the least known among the top tier candidates), and giving SC conservatives a better idea of his values and how much we have in common, it was bound to make a difference. Add this to his big victory at the Iowa Straw Poll last Saturday, and you could say that he's the only candidate that's showing real momentum right now.
(full disclosure: I'm on the Romney wagon)
